App store screenshot design

Captioned screenshot sets for app store listings, planned so the first few tell the story on their own.

The first screenshots do most of the work

In a store search result, people see your icon, your name and the first few screenshots. Many decide there whether to open the listing. We plan the set so those first images show the main reason to install the app, with a short caption on each that says what the user gets.

Planning the set

  1. List the three to five things the app helps people do, in order of importance.
  2. Pick one screen for each, captured from the real app with clean sample data.
  3. Write a caption for each, short enough to read at search-result size.
  4. Design the frames and background once, then apply them to every screen.

Store rules and sizes

The app stores set the sizes and number of screenshots for each device and update them from time to time. Screenshots also have to show the app accurately. We check the current guidelines for the stores and devices you list on before building the final set, and we only show screens that are in the app.

Localized sets

If your app is available in other languages, translated captions and localized screens can help in those markets. Send the translations and screenshots from the localized build, and we produce a set for each language from the same template.

Questions

Do you make app preview videos?

No, we design still screenshots. If you also need a preview video, we can prepare graphics and captions that match it.

Can you update the set when the app changes?

Yes. Because the set is built from templates, updating screens or captions for a new version is a small job.
